How to Celebrate Christmas and New Year in Crete: The Best Traditions and Customs

Crete is a beautiful island that celebrates Christmas and New Year with joy and enthusiasm.

The island has a rich and diverse cultural heritage that reflects its history and influences. If you want to experience the festive spirit and the authentic customs of Crete, here are some of the best traditions and customs that you should know and follow:

Christmas kalanta (carols) and ships: One of the most charming and popular traditions in Crete is the singing of Christmas carols (kalanta) by groups of children who visit houses and shops on Christmas Eve, offering their wishes and blessings. The owners reward them with money or sweets for their songs. The children usually carry triangles or other musical instruments to accompany their singing. Another traditional custom is the decoration of wooden ships with lights and ornaments, instead of Christmas trees. This is a tribute to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors, and a way of expressing gratitude for the safe return of the seamen from the sea.

New Year’s cake (vasilopita) and coin: Another important tradition in Crete is the cutting of the New Year’s cake (vasilopita), which is a round cake with a hidden coin inside. The cake is cut at midnight on New Year’s Eve, after the family has exchanged wishes and kisses. The first piece is for Christ, the second for the house, and then for each member of the family. The one who gets the piece with the coin is considered to be the lucky one of the year. The coin is usually made of gold or silver, and sometimes has the image of St. Basil, who is the Greek equivalent of Santa Claus.
